Our Philosophies and Goals
Advocacy Unlimited holds the core value and belief that individuals in recovery from psychiatric disabilities or co-occurring disorders should have the full rights, opportunities, and expectations for a meaningful and personally satisfying life afforded to all members of society.

The agency further maintains that consumers of mental health and substance abuse services understand their own needs and desires, as well as those of their peers, better than anyone and are capable of acting on their own behalf. Although stigma and long-term hospitalization have stood in the way of consumers' abilities to determine the course of their lives, through its Advocacy Education Course, AU seeks to assist people in overcoming these barriers. Our goal is to achieve total integration for these individuals into the community.

To accomplish this goal, AU educates consumer leaders in advocacy skills that will empower them to play a central role in shaping the policies and services that affect their lives. The vision is to educate enough people to build a "strong, vocal, and united" grassroots movement in Connecticut.

"The underlying strategy is to establish a network of educated consumer advocates placed in key locations throughout the state. As they share the skills they learn with other consumers, the grassroots movement will grow strong and prosper."
